Ann Arbor Buys Electric Mustangs for Police Officers

The Ann Arbor, Mich., Police Department is purchasing two electric Ford Mustang vehicles for its patrol fleet, consistent with its green fleet policy. The Mach-E AWD vehicles cost $47,000 each, according to city council documents.

The all-electric vehicles are new to the market, and the city does not expect to receive the vehicles until the fall, according to a city memo. The AWD models will address winter weather concerns, and the vehicle is rated at 210 miles per charge.

Funding will come from several sources. The Sustainability and Innovations Office will contribute $30,500 toward the initial purchase price of the vehicles, and the Police Department will cover the increased replacement costs each year. Fuel savings is expected to offset the increased vehicle costs. The Fleet Services Fund will be used to pay for Level 2 chargers at an estimated cost of $5,000 each.

The city will purchase the vehicles through the State of Michigan’s MiDeal program.
